Citing the need for judicial clarity and the potential for voter confusion, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett says he will challenge a ruling that moves the Quality Education and Jobs Initiative forward.
Earlier this month Bennett rejected almost 300,000 signatures from people who want to see the proposal on the ballot.
He said the text on the printed forms did not match the application originally filed with his office.
Supporters of the initiative, which would indefinitely extend the one-cent sales tax approved by voters to fund education, say the clerical error was minor and the signatures should be admitted.
Last week, a Maricopa County judge ruled in favor of the initiative.
Bennett says his office is concerned with the impact the court’s decision could have on future ballot measures. In the meantime, Bennett’s office continues to check the petitions submitted to his office.
