The Tucson Unified School District on Tuesday will hold its second special meeting in two weeks, a continuation of a discussion whose outcome could affect the employment of Superintendent H.T. Sanchez.
Last week’s meeting saw the public air some strong opinions about the superintendent, both against and in support of the Sanchez.
November’s election flipped a 3-2 school board majority, which had stood between superintendent Sanchez and this kind of uncertainty. That changed when Rachael Sedgwick replaced Cam Juarez on the board and set in motion the process that has put the superintendent’s job on the line.
The board spent three hours in closed session Tuesday, Feb. last week discussing the superintendent’s employment, but didn’t hint at the direction it wanted to go. Board members enlisted two law firms, and expressed hope that the matter would be resolved at today’s meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Duffy Community Center on East Fifth Street.
If the board votes to fire the superintendent, the district could be on the hook for more than $400,000 of salary guaranteed in his contract – that is, if he is terminated without cause.
