Among the changes being considered are giving the city manager greater hire and fire authority, making the mayor and council full time positions and giving the mayor a vote on some things he is now excluded from such as firing the city manager.
Retired General Ron Shoopman, president of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council says some tweaking is needed in the city charter to make the Tucson City Council more efficient.
The changes include making the mayor and council full-time positions and increasing their current salaries of $42,000 and $24,000 respectively. Also, increasing the number of wards as the population increases.
General Shoopman says the changes are needed because the current city charter was adopted in 1929 when the city of Tucson was a community of around 30,000. Shoopman and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council will make their pitch in July to the city council to put the items on the November ballot.
