A new call center launched by the Mexican Consulate in Tucson provides a 24/7 lifeline for Mexican nationals lost in the American system.
At the Center for Information and Assistance to Mexicans as many as 40 Spanish-speaking operators answer questions on topics from deportation to starting a business in Tucson.
In the first few days, the most urgent questions involve people in Mexico looking for loved ones who entered the U.S. illegally and cannot be located.
“People feel relived when we can give them information," said Jose Campos, who has fielded many of those calls. "Even if he is in prison– he’s OK. He is under U.S. authorities and he is not lost in the desert, for example.”
The Mexican Consul reported last year there were almost 140,000 calls for help. His office was overwhelmed and many calls were lost. He said with this new center, all calls should be answered immediately.
