The Tucson Planning Commission could decide Thursday whether to recommend changes in the city’s zoning codes to the mayor and city council.

Until now, many people with chicken coops or vegetable gardens in their backyards have been, technically, in violation of existing zoning codes.

The city has been largely lenient in enforcement and the current proposal would officially expand the areas where residents could practice all aspects of urban agriculture.

The issue has been on the city agenda for several years. The planning commission has now completed five study sessions on the zoning changes. If they vote to adopt the proposal Thursday, the document will go to the mayor and city council for approval.

Residents can give their input at the hearing, which starts at 6 p.m. in the in the Mayor and Council Chambers, City Hall, 1st floor 255 W. Alameda St.
