Listen:
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild is on the brink of winning another four-year term.
No one filed petitions by Wednesday's deadline to run against him in this year's election. Unless a write-in candidate files by July 16, Rothschild will be unopposed.
Voters will have choices in the three City Council wards on the ballot.
The deadline for prospective candidates to turn in nominating petitions to qualify to be on the ballot for the August primary and November general election passed without filings by two people who had initiated the mayoral candidacy process.
Democratic City Council incumbents in west side Ward 1 and east side Wards 2 and 4 have Republican challengers. None candidate is opposed for the August primary elections, so all will advance to the November general election.
The general election is city-wide, so no matter where a voter lives, he or she can vote in these three ward races.
The candidates:
Ward 1
Democrat Regina Romero, seeking third term
Republican Bill Hunt
Ward 2
Democrat Paul Cunningham, seeking third term
Republican Kelly Lawton
Ward 4
Democrat Shirley Scott, seeking sixth term
Republican Margaret Burkholder
The candidates listed above filed petitions to qualify for the ballot before the Wednesday deadline. They are on the ballot unless the validity of the signatures are contested in court.
Write-in candidates for all races have until July 16 to file to get their name on the Aug. 25 primary election ballot. Another write-in deadline for the general election is Sept. 24.
The city election will be entirely conducted by mail, all registered voters will get a ballot in their mailbox and can mail it back to the city or drop it off at select locations on election day.
