The U.S. Postal Service has stopped processing mail in Tucson, and all outgoing mail from Tucson is being shipped to Phoenix for sorting and distribution.
The Morris K. Udall Post Office on South Cherrybell Stravenue in Tucson now will serve as a shipping point for the mail heading to Phoenix. Post office service to customers coming to the station will continue.
The change in handling outgoing mail is expected to increase delivery time for letters and other mail. It also means there no longer will be an automatic Tucson postmark on mail.
The postal service had announced months ago its intention to end outgoing mail processing in Tucson as a way to save money.
U.S. Rep. Ron Barber issued a statement Monday protesting the end of Tucson mail handling, saying it will have “a disproportionate impact on the people who live and operate businesses in Tucson and Southern Arizona.”
