Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever had alcohol in his system when he died in a car crash Sept. 18, authorities say.
Dever, a four-term Republican sheriff, was killed when he lost control of his vehicle on a gravel road outside the northern Arizona town of Williams.
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office says preliminary toxicology results received Friday indicate that Dever had enough alcohol in his bloodstream to be considered impaired at the time of the crash.
Dever's exact blood-alcohol content has not yet been revealed.
Dever was traveling to meet family members for a camping and hunting trip when his pickup rolled. The investigation that followed his death showed he had been traveling at 62 mph along a gravel forest road that doesn't have a speed limit, and that his seatbelt was unbuckled when the accident occurred.
