Underneath the border town of Nogales is another world: A vast network of official and illicit tunnels that connect Mexico and the U.S. Mexican drug smugglers crawl through the tunnels and dig new ones, exiting on the U.S. side through manholes and the floors of abandoned buildings.
Reporter Mark Duggan captures the unique sound of the tunnels and the feel of their confined spaces. He speaks with a member of the Border Patrol’s specially trained “Tunnel Rat” team who spends 8 hours a day crawling through the tunnels, playing a cat-and-mouse game with smugglers.
Listen Friday, Sept. 4 on Arizona Spotlight.
