For the past year, Arizona Public Media has been working with Cochise County to erect a new radio transmission tower capable of supporting a full-power FM antenna that will strengthen NPR radio service in southeastern Arizona. The partnership with Cochise County was the last stage in a process that began more than 11 years ago.

On October 11, 2018 the new radio transmission facility was completed and KUAS 88.9 FM began offering services to Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Benson, Huachuca City, and Douglas, providing local and regional programming and national NPR news and information from AZPM’s studios based at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

AZPM hosted an open-house event at UA's Sierra Vista campus on October 29 to share the announcement about the new KUAS 88.9 FM. Dozens of educators participated in a PBS LearningMedia workshop conducted by Cheryl Gerken, AZPM's new education outreach coordinator. The event culminated in a discussion and Q&A session with Mark McLemore, host of Arizona Spotlight and Christopher Conover, host of The Buzz on NPR 89.1 FM.
